Nissan has confirmed that it will build a successor to its 2024 Nissan Leaf electric car as part of a deal that will bring a major new battery factory to the UK. The new 2024 Nissan Leaf slated to arrive in 2024 will continue to be produced in UK right-hand drive.

A new EV manufacturing hub called the EV36Zero, will be built and represents an overall investment of around £1 billion (AUD$1.88 billion) from Nissan and its partner, battery manufacturer Envision AESC.
This will create 900 direct jobs at Nissan and 750 new Envision AESC jobs, as well as secure over 4,500 jobs across the wider supply chain. The battery plant will be based at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP), a new hub located just north of Nissan’s Sunderland site.
The overall capacity for Nissan’s new plant will be an initial 9GWh – a relatively small amount compared to what many industry experts say the country will need if it is to remain a competitive base for car manufacturing.
But the deal is indeed a significant boost for Sunderland, as one of the main reasons for placing the battery factory next to an existing car factory is to supply what Nissan calls a “new generation electric crossover”.

2024 Nissan Leaf News [UPDATED]
As far as we’re concerned, Nissan is currently revealing the price of the 2024 Leaf model, which does not include any significant modifications. The simplified model inventory retains the same two trim levels as the 2023 model year: Leaf S and Leaf SV Plus. The initial MSRP for the 2024 Leaf S is $28,140, up $100. The 2024 Leaf SV Plus costs $150, up to $36,190. The $1,095 destination fee remains unchanged.

There is no indication in the press release that the Nissan Leaf will qualify for the maximum $7,500 federal tax credit. Bear in mind that the Leaf cannot meet the requirements of the 2022 Inflation Reducing Act (IRA) even though it manufactures the vehicle (and its battery) locally in the United States. However, customers may still be eligible for incentives through rent.
The Nissan Leaf S is equipped with a 40 kWh battery and a 110 kW electric motor. It has a combined range of 149 miles per EPA. The Nissan Leaf SV Plus is equipped with a 60 kWh battery and 160 kW electric motor, and its estimated range is 212 miles.
The Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six active driver assistance technologies including Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning and Intervention, and Intelligent Lane Intervention, is listed as standard equipment by the manufacturer. Additionally, ProPILOT Assist and Intelligent Around View Monitor are added to the Leaf SV Plus.
We don’t expect Nissan Leaf sales to increase from a few thousand units in the first quarter of 2023 without a significant redesign. Currently, the Japanese company seems to be more concerned with the Nissan Ariya and its prospective products.
The current generation 2024 Nissan Leaf electric hatchback will be phased out in the ‘mid-decade’, claims industry journal Automotive News. According to the publication, the Japanese marque will replace the 2024 Nissan Leaf with “a new model that is more suited to the needs of modern EV buyers.” Nissan has a number of new EVs in development, starting with the Ariya crossover. The local launch time for the Ariya revealed in 2020, is yet to be confirmed.
The news follows similar reports from Europe in late 2021, with the brand’s European boss speaking to Autocar about a new 2024 Nissan Leaf replacement electric small SUV set to be built in the UK in 2024. However, it now seems highly unlikely that the signage will be retained beyond 2025.
A Nissan Australia spokesperson declined to comment on the 2024 Nissan Leaf’s future, however, the company recently celebrated 10 years since the electric hatchback went on sale locally. Available here since June 2012, the 2024 Nissan Leaf has recorded over 2000 sales. Globally, about 600,000 units have been sold since the model debuted in 2010.

CHadeMO: 2024 Nissan Leaf
Nissan has once again failed to replace the outdated CHAdeMO charging port, which it should have done years ago. Nissan’s all-electric compact car became the world’s best-selling EV in 2018 before the Tesla Model 3 overtook it in early 2020.
The Nissan Leaf is the only new EV for the US market with CHAdeMO, although the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid also uses it (the Leaf and Outlander PHEV have a CHAdeMO port and a J1772 port for Level 2 AC charging). As we recently emphasized, there are plenty of locations to quickly charge your Leaf.
According to data from the Department of Energy, there were 4,779 CHAdeMO charging stations with 6,930 individual connectors as of June 2023. This number is smaller than Tesla and CCS connectors but serves a limited population of vehicles.

Since then, however, nearly every automaker has introduced all-electric vehicles with more advanced technology and, in many cases, greater range. Over the years, Nissan has released a number of “updates” with increased range and minor aesthetic improvements.
Nissan included new alloy wheels, Nissan branding, and exterior colors for the 2022 LEAF model year, but arguably missed out on its biggest opportunity for development.
Nissan continues to use the lesser CHAdeMO charging connector, which is less convenient and harder to find than the more standard CSS port. Nonetheless, Nissan included an antiquated charging plug in the recently released 2024 LEAF.
Nissan today announced that the 2024 Nissan LEAF is now available for less than $30,000, making it one of the most affordable EV options in the United States.

2024 Nissan Leaf Electric
COO Ashwani Gupta in his presentation last week emphasized that the automaker wants to make its EVs a superior value which means they are more attractive and more accessible. “We are working on multiple levels to make EVs more competitive, including battery advancements and manufacturing efficiencies,” he said.

Nissan executives also said part of that would be achieved through a new push to integrate core e-powertrain components which would achieve a 30% cost reduction by 2026.
It will also take a new local approach to manufacture, with battery production all close to vehicle production.
This information is welcome, as for several years Nissan’s once-powerful EV plans have stagnated.
Company officials have also pushed for a later arrival date and have become increasingly ambiguous about what has become the much-anticipated next wave of powertrain technology to sweep across the lineup of a series-hybrid system called e-Power for Nissan as well as for the new Infiniti lineup. Infiniti confirmed that hybrid plans have been scrapped.
The Chill-Out hint may be the two vehicles one with a lower ride height and acting as a true successor to the Leaf, the other more appealing for crossover sensitivity but sacrificing some range and efficiency.
To support that idea, we look to a statement from Nissan’s senior VP for global design, Alfonso Albaisa, who in a January interview with Green Car Reports called the Leaf an icon and hinted that while Nissan might not be working on a direct replacement for the Nissan. 2024 Nissan Leaf Launching
While the distance from the original 2024 Nissan Leaf launch to the Ariya, which is imminent, is more than 10 years, “we can only imagine in five years, because it will accelerate,” Albaisa said.

“It’s really changing the world,” he said. “Everyone now takes it for granted. It’s a name that means a lot to our family and has significant cultural value because it changed us.”
Ariya was never meant to be a substitute for 2024 Nissan Leaf. Earlier this year Nissan announced a massive price drop of thousands on the 2022 Leaf — possibly in preparation for a sale with the Ariya. And Nissan has confirmed that the two will be positioned side by side, potentially for years.
Aditya Jairaj, Nissan’s US director of marketing and EV sales strategy, recently told Green Car Reports that the knowledge Nissan has about its EV customers and how they use them puts it at an advantage when additional EVs in the future arrive.
“You have 5 billion miles that consumers drive on the road. half a million cars sold worldwide, 160,000 cars sold in the US; we understand some customer insights, interests and pain points, all of that,” Jairaj said. “So we have learned from 2024 Nissan Leaf, and we will use it, continue to use it for Leaf and for other EVs.”
In April, Nissan announced its “intention” to make battery electric vehicles more than 40% of US sales by 2030, with additional sales from other electric vehicles such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
It also said that “any new Nissan vehicle offering in key markets will be electrified” by the early 2030s.
Nissan can’t do it with the Ariya alone. Given this snippet of information, it’s likely that there will be a 2024 Nissan Leaf successor, as well as a few more EVs by then, even for the US. Maybe even small multipurpose pickups and urban utility vehicles.
The exact form of 2024 Nissan Leaf successor may not be fully revealed—even in Yokohama.

2024 Nissan Leaf Factory
Given the time involved, this will definitely be the successor to the current 2024 Nissan Leaf, a hatchback EV that has been made in the UK since 2012. The life cycle of the current edition of the car should end sometime in 2024, allowing time. for battery factories to start operating when vehicles switch to the new Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance CMF-EV platform. The local city council, meanwhile, is launching the ‘Microgrid’ project that will use a second-life EV battery to store excess energy generated during the day and then help balance demand on the grid. The plan includes up to 1MW of second-life battery storage and is estimated to save up to 55,000 tonnes of carbon per year.
2024 Nissan Leaf Battery
The Ariya’s entry-level battery pack is a 63-kWh unit; an optional 87-kWh unit is available. The front-drive, 87-kWh model will cover about 300 miles. Based on other EVs with battery packs in the 60 to 65 kWh capacity range, we’d expect the front-drive Ariya with a 63 kWh battery to offer something north of a total range of 200 miles.

The Ariya package is liquid-cooled (unlike the Leaf) and the total output will be 389 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque.
This still leaves the room (sorry) in Nissan’s lineup for a more economical model. Given the current economic environment, it seems that Nissan has an idea for a more cost-effective replacement for the new 2024 Nissan Leaf.
The first-generation Leaf offers a single electric motor that produces 80kW of power and 280Nm of torque. The electric hatchback will remain in Nissan’s lineup in the future, with development work continuing on the next-generation Micra 2024 for Europe.
The all-electric Micra will ride on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-B EV platform, which will also power the resurrected Renault 5.
