New 2024 Nissan Armada Full-Size Glory V8 SUV Premium Review

2024 Nissan Armada: Nissan’s largest SUV, the Nissan Armada, stands out as one of the few remaining body-on-frame SUVs in the market today. Its extensive list of standard features and well-designed interior make it an appealing choice. Additionally, a recent facelift has enhanced its exterior aesthetics.

However, the Armada does exhibit signs of being an older model, with several areas highlighting its dated nature. Compared to other SUVs in its class, it may not offer the same level of usability, mainly due to a high-load floor and a relatively cramped rear seat area.

Another drawback of the Armada is its V8 engine, which is known for its excessive fuel consumption. However, there are reports suggesting that this might change in 2024. While there may not be significant updates to the bodywork or interior, rumors suggest a potential transformation under the hood.

It is speculated that the V8 engine will be replaced with a new twin-turbo V6, although Nissan has yet to confirm these reports. With this change, it is expected that the V6 will match or potentially surpass the current V8’s performance of 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque while offering improved fuel efficiency.

2024 Nissan Armada Review

Fuel and emission regulations are becoming stricter worldwide, not just in Europe. American automakers are well aware of this, which is why the new Toyota Sequoia has ditched its fuel-guzzling V8 engine in favor of a more efficient 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6.

2024 Nissan Armada

It appears that Nissan will follow a similar path with their full-size SUV, the next-generation Armada. According to reliable sources mentioned by Automotive News, the three-row vehicle will also drop its naturally aspirated V8 engine in favor of a smaller and more efficient six-cylinder unit.

Quoting a dealer with inside information on Nissan’s plans, AN states that the next-gen Armada will adopt a newly developed twin-turbo V6 engine. This move not only mirrors the Sequoia but also the Ford Expedition, which retired its V8 engine a few years ago.

The second-generation Armada has been around since the 2017 model year and received a mid-cycle facelift for the 2021 model year. Its successor is expected to arrive at dealerships across North America by late 2023.

This would make it a 2024 model with significantly improved fuel efficiency compared to the current generation. We would like to remind you that the 2WD variant achieves 16 miles per gallon (6.8 km/liter) combined, while the 4WD version only manages 15 miles per gallon (6.3 km/liter).

As for power, we do not expect a significant decrease despite adopting a smaller engine. The current 5.6-liter V8 unit pumps out 400 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 413 pound-feet of torque.

The adoption of forced induction will not only have an impact on fuel savings but also allow for more low-end power, although its maximum output may not match that of the VK56VD.

Meanwhile, the automaker also announced this week that they plan to halt the development of internal combustion engines (ICE) for the European market. However, Nissan stated that they will continue to refine gasoline engines where the project remains relevant, including in the United States.

A few days ago, Nikkei Asia reported that R&D efforts will primarily continue for trucks and SUVs in the United States.

Engine

Similar to Toyota’s decision, Nissan is rumored to be considering a similar move. According to reports, when the Armada undergoes a complete redesign for the 2024 model year, the body-on-frame SUV is expected to drop its current 5.6-liter V8 engine from the VK engine family. The existing V8 engine produces 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet (560 Nm) of torque in the 2022 model.

Considering that the Sequoia has already made the switch to a twin-turbo V6 engine, this rumor holds some credibility. Automotive News has received information from an anonymous dealer source that the 2024 Nissan Armada will feature a newly developed engine, which is somewhat surprising given Nissan’s recent announcement regarding the abandonment of new combustion engine development for vehicles bound for Europe.

Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer, Ashwani Gupta, has attributed this decision to the stringent Euro 7 regulations, which essentially act as a de facto ban on internal combustion engines in the European Union.
